Bettis Company History

  • Founded on October 1, 1974, by Harry M. Bettis, H. M. Bettis, Inc. started as a venture for Harry to invest in oil and gas, initially collaborating with his father-in-law's company, Turnco, Inc. Harry worked closely with industry partners such as RC Turner, Norman D. Stovall, Jr., and W. T. Boyle, focusing on acquiring valuable oil and gas assets.

Over the decades, H. M. Bettis, Inc. expanded its horizons, venturing into realms like real estate, cattle ranching, ownership of ethanol plants, commodity trading, and investments in stocks and bonds, among many other undertakings. Despite this diversification, the core of the company remains deeply rooted in the oil and gas industry, where it continues to invest in 3-D seismic projects along with conventional and non-conventional drilling projects.

  • Turnco, Inc., founded by R.C. Turner, traces its origins back to the 1930s when it was part of the partnership known as Kleiner, Turner, Fiske & West. This partnership played a pivotal role in operating numerous wells in northern Young County, particularly in the prolific Langston- Kleiner field, which yielded over 3 million barrels of oil. R.C. Turner served as the managing partner of Kleiner, Turner, Fiske & West, contributing to its success.

Officially incorporated on June 11, 1962, Turnco, Inc. initially had H. M. Bettis, B. V. Freeman, and Homer L. Thornton, Jr. as its original directors. The ownership of Turnco, Inc. was primarily held by the heirs of R.C. Turner.

In 2004, a significant development took place when the majority of Turnco’s oil and gas assets were sold to Sonic Oil & Gas, LP. Following the Sonic acquisition, Harry M. Bettis acquired all the outstanding shares of Turnco, Inc., becoming the sole owner of the company.

Turnco, Inc.’s rich history and evolution are a testament to its enduring legacy in the oil and gas industry, with a lineage that can be traced back to its early partnership roots and a continued commitment to success under the ownership of Harry M. Bettis and his predecessors.

  • Established on December 1, 1982, H. M. J. Minerals, Inc. was founded by Harry M. Bettis, along with his wife Jean and their children: Harry Bettis, Jr., Mary Bettis Hayes, and John D. Bettis. The company's name is derived from the initials of the three children.

Initially, the corporation's primary focus was on acquiring both producing and non-producing mineral interests. However, over the years, the company has expanded its portfolio to include various non-oil and gas assets.

  • Lancer Minerals, a general partnership, was formed in 1968. The principals of Bettis, Boyle & Stovall realized that opportunities were available to acquire mineral interests as well as working interests. A general partnership consisting of H.M. Bettis, W.T. Boyle, Norman Stovall, Jr., Spencer Street, Jr. and Turnco, Inc. doing business as Lancer Minerals was formed in 1968 for this purpose with Spencer Street acting as the manager. In 1969 Lancer Minerals made a major purchase of producing and non-producing minerals located in Texas, Oklahoma and other states from J.H. Boyle (no relation to WT Boyle) and Hanlon Oil Company, who were the principals of Warren Petroleum which was later acquired by Gulf Oil Co.

Lancer Properties, LLC and Lancer Minerals, Ltd. on December 18, 2003. It is managed by the members through managers and through such officers, if any, as may be employed by the managers. On December 2, 2003, Lancer Minerals, the general partnership, was converted to a limited partnership, Lancer Minerals, Ltd. ("Lancer") and a separate company, Lancer Properties,

LLC, was formed to act as general partner. Lancer minerals, which numbers in the hundreds. The purposes of the Partnership are to own and operate mineral interests, oil and gas interests, oil and gas working interests, royalty interests, overriding royalty interests and other interests, wherever situated.

From its inception Lancer was managed by Spencer Street. When he died, Norman Stovall took over as manager for a short time. John Cox took over from Norman and in 2007 Dwight Boyle took over as president of the general partner.

  • The precursor of Bettis, Boyle and Stovall was a joint venture between Harry Bettis and Weldon T. Boyle. W.T. Boyle began working in the North Texas oilfields in 1934 as a roustabout for Kleiner, Turner, Fiske & West, a partnership that operated numerous wells in northern Young County especially the prolific Langston-Kleiner field, which made over 3 million barrels of oil.

Harry Bettis moved to Graham in 1955 after completing his military service as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force following his graduation from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, NY. He entered the oil business with his father-in-law, R.C. Turner, who was the managing partner of Kleiner, Turner, Fiske & West and also the President of Turnco, Inc. Soon after moving to Graham, Harry Bettis and W.T. Boyle, doing business as Bettis & Boyle, began purchasing producing oil wells. Their business plan was to borrow 100% of the purchase price for producing oil properties, operate the wells and apply their knowledge and experience in oilfield operations to improve the daily oil production. W.T. was the field expert and Harry took care of office operations and evaluating leases.

Norman D. Stovall, Jr. returned to Graham in 1954 after completing his service in the U.S. Navy as a helicopter pilot for underway replenishment of ships at sea and became active in his family's oil business. In 1958 he joined W.T. Boyle, Harry Bettis and Turnco, Inc., a corporation founded by R.C. Turner, a veteran North Texas oilman, as equal partners, to form Bettis, Boyle & Stovall (BBS) as a joint venture.

In 1963 BBS hired Spencer B. Street, Jr., former city manager of Graham, Texas, and also a former Navy pilot, to find and acquire additional properties. As a result of his success in locating, evaluating and acquiring wells, Spencer later joined Bettis, Boyle & Stovall as an equal partner.

In 2022, the partners, employes and associated entities of the partners sold all their interest in operated properties to PETEX of Breckenridge, Texas. Bettis, Boyle & Stovall, Inc. will terminate December 31, 2023, and will cease to exist.

  • Established on May 1, 2007, HMB Family Partnership, LP, together with its general partner, Bettis Operating, LLC, was founded. This partnership was originally created to consolidate the personal assets of Harry M. Bettis into a structured entity capable of improved asset control and management.
